In a remarkable story of perseverance, North Texas SC's Diego Hernandez emerged as the MLS NEXT Rising Star for Matchday 9. This exceptional midfielder has overcome immense challenges, including a life-altering car accident that shook his world.

“I remember turning on my truck,” Hernandez said.

He described that day and explained how he managed himself to get back on the field, mentally and physically.

“Unfortunately, I was struck on my side, which caused my truck to flip for close to 80 yards, the truck that hit me was a Silverado going about 95 miles an hour,” Hernandez stated.

The 18-year-old explained that he was able to overcome this tragedy due to his family’s support and his faith in God.

Despite the challenges, North Texas SC’s midfielder has come back stronger than ever. On Sunday night, the 18-year-old scored his first goal of the season less than ten minutes after subbing into the match against Houston Dynamo 2.

Hernandez received a pass from Anthony Ramirez to strike against Houston Dynamo 2 in the 82nd minute of the game to take the 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, for Hernandez and North Texas SC, Dynamo 2 was able to come back by scoring a last-minute goal to send the game to a shootout where they would earn a 6-5 victory.

Diego Hernandez and North Texas SC will now look to earn a victory next week when they face off against Colorado Rapids 2 at home on May 25.
