Columbus Crew 2 midfielder Cole Mrowka has been named the MLS NEXT Rising Star of Matchday 14. Mrowka played the entire match and delivered the game-winning assist in Crew 2’s 1-0 victory over Huntsville City FC on Matchday 14 to earn the award.
In the first half of the game, both teams were evenly matched and unable to gain the upper hand. However, early in the first half, Mrowka found an opening in Huntsville City FC's defense and connected with Coleman Gannon in the box. Upon receiving the pass, Gannon quickly turned and fired a powerful shot into the net, giving Crew 2 the lead.
Mrowka's presence has been instrumental for Columbus Crew 2 this season, contributing one goal and three assists in 13 appearances. The 17-year-old’s outstanding displays on the pitch have already earned him the MLS NEXT Rising Star award once before for his debut professional goal on Matchday 6.
The young midfielder will look to contribute to another victory during Matchday 15 when Columbus Crew 2 faces off against Chicago Fire II at SeatGeek Stadium on Sunday, July 2.
