The Sophomore Season

Carolina Core FC begins their sophomore season on the road with a visit to Chase Stadium to take on Inter Miami II. Last season saw CCFC narrowly miss out on a playoff position (by two points) – failing to beat Inter Miami II on Decision Day. The series record between the two sides is currently in favor of the hosts, with The Foxes eager to turn it around: 0-2-1 (2 GF, 7 GA).

The Foxes have used time during the off-season to bolster the squad with the signings of former Columbus Crew 2 defender Zion Scarlett and former Inter Miami CF Academy midfielder Mateo Sarmiento. The newly completed Go-Forth Elite Performance Center training facility also presents a significant aid to reach this season’s goal—a playoff position. CCFC’s preseason was highlighted by a win against 2024 ACC champion and NCAA quarter-finalist Wake Forest.

Player to Watch

Last season, Facundo Canete scored or assisted in 18 total goals in 25 MLS NEXT Pro appearances for The Foxes, making him the highest-scoring and assisting player on CCFC. The Core’s previous campaign also saw Canete register an 84.3% pass completion, with 42 key passes. The Argentine midfielder has shown no sign of slowing down, making sure to get his name on the board in the 1-0 victory over Wake Forest University in the preseason. In a man of the match performance against the New York Red Bulls II last season, Canete demonstrated his ability to change matches, registering four total goal contributions (two goals and two assists) in CCFC’s 4-2 win. Following the end of the regular season, Facundo was listed as one of the MLS NEXT Pro Best XI Honorable Mentions.

Inter Miami II

Inter Miami II opened their MLS NEXT Pro season last Friday at Chase Stadium with a 2-1 defeat to Chattanooga FC. The team was led by new head coach Cristian ‘Lobo’ Ledesma who was previously an assistant coach for the club. César Abadía-Reda scored the team’s first goal of the season in the sixth minute of the match, squeezing in a shot from a tough angle to equalize the match.

Last season saw Inter Miami II finish third in the Eastern Conference regular season standings before getting knocked out by seventh seed Columbus Crew 2 in the conference quarterfinals. Inter Miami II had a favorable home record of 8-3-3, which they will hope to build on this season and bounce back from their early defeat when hosting The Foxes on Thursday.
