Kayondo Set to Face Algeria and Niger in Africa Cup of Nations
HERRIMAN, Utah (Wednesday, June 1, 2022) – Real Monarchs defender Aziz Kayondo has been called to represent the Uganda National Team for its upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches against Algeria on June 4 and Niger on June 8.
Kayondo, 19, signed with Real Monarchs on April 27 from Ugandan powerhouse Vipers SC. The Ugandan made his first appearance for the Monarchs on May 8 against Sporting Kansas City II, making an immediate impact with two shots and one on target. Since then, Kayondo has started every match available, recording 346 minutes, while tallying 3 shots, and 8 key passes since joining the Club.
The defender has made six appearances for the Ugandan National Team, most recently appearing in both World Cup Qualifying matches versus Rwanda. Additionally, Kayondo has been an integral part of the Uganda Youth National Team ranks, receiving Best XI honors in the 2020 U-20 AFCON tournament after leading the team to the finals.
Real Monarchs are currently competing in the newly formed MLS NEXT Pro, with its next home match set for Friday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. MT at Zions Bank Stadium against San Jose Earthquakes II. This move comes after seven seasons in the USL Championship, during which the team won the 2019 USL Championship Cup, the 2017 USL Regular Season Shield, and the Western Conference Title in both 2017 and 2019, while also qualifying for the postseason in 2018.
