In a battle between two of the best teams in the Western Conference, Houston Dynamo 2 overcame an early deficit to defeat Colorado Rapids 2 by 3-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday night.
Dynamo 2’s victory halted the Rapids 2 hopes of clinching an early playoff berth and also earned Kenny Bundy’s side the Team of Matchday 21 honor.
With the victory over Rapids 2, Dynamo 2 extended their unbeaten streak to five games and have now earned 13 points from their last five matches. They now sit in fourth place in the Western Conference standings with 35 points.
Rapids 2 initially took the lead in the 18th minute thanks to a Diego Rubio curler that found the net at the far post.
Houston Dynamo 2's Jacob Evans dribbled into the Rapids 2 box and set up Talen Maples, whose initial shot was saved, but Diego Gonzalez capitalized on the rebound to secure the equalizing goal.
Dynamo 2 took the lead just moments later when Isaiah LeFlore caught the Rapids 2 defense flat footed and to set up Isaiah Reid for a clinical finish from the top of the box.
Jacob Evans would go on to score the third goal for Dynamo 2 in the 63rd minute off a forced turnover in the midfield, sealing the victory and the three points for the visitors.
Dynamo 2’s defense, led by Xavier Valdez, also proved resilient, with Valdez making key stops, including a penalty save against Marlon Vargas in the 67th minute.
After their road victory over Rapids 2, Kenny Bundy’s side will face off against Whitecaps FC 2 at home on August 13th in hopes of extending their unbeaten streak.
